    /facepalm

It isn't wasted resources, please stop using that term, VOIP falls under sound which is a completely different team to world builders, programmers etc. it doesn't take away from anything, it only adds more to the game, the VOIP will most likely be in group, raid and guild situations but will be optional, if you don't want it, turn it off, it is that simple.

Implementing a system like this isn't in exchange for something else, we don't sit around a table and say "VOIP sounds good, let's roll with it", "Oh wait, now we have to remove trees and quests..." it just doesn't work like that but posting that it is a wasted resource immediately puts people on the aggressive side of the fence to protect other things in the game from being "forgotten about" or removed and it is completely false. :)

If you don't like something that we implement in-game, you will most likely be able to toggle or turn it off but it is not a "waste of resources" as there will be a lot of people who will use it and enjoy it. :)

hehe my bad mate , I was under the impression you either had to do something back end or "buy" a permission to use a service.

If it is as simple as that im all for it :)

I just want to see the base game completed , before the can we have this or that crowd starts asking for fluff :P

I guess im more looking at it from a establish a solid base game, then worry about "extras" .

Not trying to be snarky , I just want to kill stuff :P

It's all good, I do understand but you have nothing to worry about, we are not wasting our time on fluff, only core systems, mechanics and features that we think will compliment Pantheon that we think will be fun and challenging, we are gamers too, just like you folks and we want this game to be something special, even more so than you all! So wasting time on fluff isn't something we do, especially with such a lean and mean dev team ;)

I was reading a thread on the Pantheon subreddit on Reddit regarding this topic, and there was mention of Discord introducing a free SDK for game developers that enables Discord integration into a game. I think this might be a great route to consider going, considering how solid of a platform Discord has turned out to be.

Despite the resources or time needed to do a built in VOIP, the real question is why? What is the point? Pantheon is aiming to bring back a lot of the things that many recent MMO’s have neglected or disregarded over the years.

    • The monthly subscription, a pay model that over several other game forums Ive seen requested as a means to directly fund the game, and weed out the rift raft, the freeloaders, and even the irritating “children” drawn to free to play games.
    • The group ideology, “Game systems” put in place to encourage players group up of their survival and success. Systems that lead players to join a guild, a family of players who share the same goals usually depicted on their website.

These systems lend themselves to an exclusion mentality, generally one that restricts outsiders as a means of the guilds success from joining with them without meeting a set of requirements. Almost certainly once of those requirements for any serious guild is using their own private VOIP.

Then there is the issue of females, According to Quantic Foundry on average 36% of High Fantasy MMO players are women, of that probably 80% (an estimate on my part) wont use Voice due to the “fear” of harassment and constant muting from degenerates in open Mic night.

So what percentage of players will use this? If this was a free to play game with solo friendly content then sure id say a lot will, but it’s not. In the end I feel this will be more of a nuisance to the majority of players.

Because we believe it helps players connect, socialise and bond in a game like Pantheon.

Will there be a built-in voice chat system?

Yes. While many players may use other chat clients we still want to implement optional voice chat in-game. Most likely you would only hear and be able to chat with people in your group and guild as hearing everyone around you becomes a cacophony of noise.

I realizes thats what VR believes that, the point of my post was to establish  why I believe differently. My apoligies for not making it clear the question of why was rhetorical.

Without sounding rude, it doesn't really matter if you believe differently my friend, we are the ones making the game and we are creating a game that we want to play using many years of collective experience as developers and gamers, if you don't want to use the VOIP in group, guild or raid situations, then don't, if you want to use your own external VOIP, that is fine too, it is an option as I stated but it isn't wasted resources, nor something we are haphazardly implementing just for the sake of it, we make these decisions based on industry knowledge, advice and experience.

Third-party VOIP has been used for many years (Teamspeak 3, Ventrillo, Mumble etc.) and continues to grow in popularity, take Discord with its 25+ million users for example, that sounds like a large percentage of users to me. We even have several Pantheon channels in there!

I am not sure why you brought this up but using female gamers (I personally dislike that term, as they are gamers just like you and me, differentiating them by gender is part of the problem and fuels that mentality that you quoted as being a problem) and assumptions/opinions/guessed percentages as a base for your argument against VOIP though? Come on man...That may be a disturbing mentality in other game genres with the majority being young male gamers but it is unlikely to happen within a mature community like ours and if it did, we would act accordingly to put an immediate stop to it but I give our community a lot more credit than that and am confident we won't see that type of behaviour in our game.

Again, not meaning to sound rude, I just wanted to explain it to you without any sugar coating but let's stay away from the gender separation and just concentrate on the VOIP discussion, please, keeping in mind we have made our decision and will be implementing our own VOIP system.
