Selling/buying - Auction House or Player-to-Player?

How will trading be handled in the game?

Is there plans to add an Auction House where you place items for sale and it's automatically handled by the Auction House. Basically a 'fire and forget' system where you just place all your rat tails for sale at X price and wait for them to sell?

Or will the trading be done in the traditional Everquest style where you simply advertised (I guess "spammed" is another word) which items you have for sale and then interact directly with someone wanting to buy in a "peer to peer" or "face to face" interaction. Put simply, someone is selling a Steel Sword +1 and you want it, so you open up trade dialogue with the player and then they add sword to trade, you add money and boom, traded.

I prefer the latter method (old style) since a face-to-face type of trading is more fun and immersive (despite spam) than dumping items on an Auction House (which in every Auction House system I have ever seen in games ends up with the Auction House being flooded with trash-items).

Maybe there could be options for players to set up a small sign-post of what they are selling and other players can interact with the sign to see what items the player has for sale (as a way to reduce spam).

Anyways, I'm not sure what is planned for the game or if something has been stated regarding this yet. Just hoping it will be more of a player-to-player interaction than some automated vendor-system.

As much as I like the "player to player" selling concept from the old EQ days - I feel like in a modern time for MMO's an Auction House wouldn't be so bad necessarily. It's definitely less tedious and takes up less time and you don't have to put off your own play time trying to sell items. The shop thing wouldn't really bother me either, sort of like the Bazaar when it came out on EQ. You'd just set up all your items and such and go AFK while you sold stuff. I'd personally like something that wouldn't take up a lot of time i'd want to spend playing

Pretty sure Brad has said there will be local (as opposed to global) auction houses, but how 'automated' they will be is not decided or they haven't said.

There is a lot of support for making things as manual as possible,  so I anticipate there being taxation of any automated auction house such that 'manual' person-to-person trading will always be the preferred method.

Personally, I think an 'auction house' that is only a listing and so just puts a 'deal' in place and then allows contact to arrange a manual exchange is ideal, but there has been LOTS of discussion.

I'm pretty sure a search of the forum will yield a lot of results and it's best to join an existing discussion so all our opinions are kept together (it's the way Kilsin and VR like it).

This depends on your playstyle though.

If you like adventuring and exploring then sure, you don't want to spend a lot of time dealing with getting rid of your items.

However some people enjoy crafting and being a business person. For those people the crafting of items and then selling them is a large part of their game. To have personal interactions with other players both when selling and buying, as well as making deals is as fun for them as exploring a new dungeon is for the players who like the adventuring. Those interactions get completely lost if handled through what essential becomes static bots whether it's the Bazaar style of AFK players in Everquest or an Auction House.

Adventurer: "How much for that Steel Sword +1?"

    Crafter: "40 gold"

Adventurer: "I don't have 40 gold. I can only afford to give 30 gold"

Crafter: "You have anything else to trade?"

Adventurer: "Well, I have some iron ore I found and some red flowers"

Crafter: "How about 30 gold, 3 iron ore and 2 of those red flowers?"

Adventurer: "Sure! You got a deal"

Interactions like these simply won't happen if everything is automated. And there would be no way for the adventurer to do a bargain or offer an alternative way to trade if everything is in a list in an Auction House where it simply says "Steel Sword +1 : 40 gold".

You could try to reach the seller, but chances are the seller is not actually a player but just an alternate character which is only logged on when the player has more stuff to dump onto the Auction House / his AFK mule.

I feel these type of social interactions are sorely missing in modern MMO's. There is simply no chatting anymore outside of guild chats.

Doesn't matter what VR builds, tlpauctions will be there, so the feature set will be:

    1) global search

    with

    2) player to player trading (because it's free)

Which is the minimum feature set to take the least amount of time, be the cheapest solution (doesn't cost any in-game currency) with the lowest chance of being ripped off.

I am looking forward to either option auction or player to player.

What I am not looking forward to is theconstant spamming in /say. If there is going to be player to player then I hope they install a trade channel and inforce it. There is no reason to be shouting, saying, or any other mode of chat to sell your items.  I think, because of the spamming problem I am leaning toward auction house as my best option.

On another note I sure hope they can get ahandle on gold spammers and sellers. I am not a tech savvy person but if there is a actual game serial number they useing maybe they can cancel that serial number forceing them to rebuy a new number to get back in.

Hmm I get what you are saying but in p99 for example in game transactions still happen all the time. -at least for the time being many players, perhaps even a majority, do not think to go to the internet to buy something.

@disposalist, joining another discussion is all well and good but the most on topic one- the death to the auction house thread, is currently closed to further comment. I doubt it will be re opened until we see an actually fleshed out trading plan from VR.

Player to player for sure, but you don't necessarily lose that with an AH.

Moving from EQ Live to Project 1999, I was amazed how much I missed player to player negotiating.

It's only used for the search.  You still contact the seller via /tell and meet them in-game for direct player to player trading.  You just don't have to sit there with your eyes bleeding watching WTS/WTB spam for hours.

My favorite is WTT though :) It opens up for all sorts of possibilities.

I'll invite you to take a look at this thread

    https://www.pantheonmmo.com/content/forums/topic/8405/classic-trade-vs-ah-compromise

It's still open for the time. It's about a compromise between the two types of selling.
