For those space nuts out there - NASA has narrowed the potential names of the Mars 2020 rover down to nine. They invited kids K-12 to suggest names and write a short essay defending her/his choice. You have roughly five days left to vote here => Go.nasa.gov/name2020. (closes Jan 27th, 2020)
They have a fascinating map that shows where votes have originated by state as well as around the world - not surprisingly the USA has the most (39k votes), followed by Turkey (9k) and Canada (2k) [as of 12:01AM Wednesday the 22nd].
P.S. - Lots of great choices, but being an EQ fanatic, I voted for Clarity.
P.P.S. - Way better than, say, Marty McMarsFace - though you may note that NASA doesn't lock you to a single vote per IP (which seems a big blunder easily avoided).
The winner was announced March 5th, the next rover will be named Perseverance.
I so wanted Clarity...perhaps next time.
Quick update: launch windows for Mars2020 (and Perseverance) open at the end of the month and run through Aug 15th. Exciting times!
