Any thoughts on laptops?

Going to need to get one that can handle the game on medium graphics settings with low lag. I don’t want to break the bank but want to invest in something that will be effective and a good investment. Any thoughts on specs from people that have logged in?

My only concern with laptops for gaming is that you're stuck with what you get.  Very few of them can be upgraded or expanded, beyond a few parts like RAM and hard drives.

I know, big downside. I plan to be a pretty big on competitive raiding and need my game ready for when the calls come to login so I think a laptop is kind of a necessity for me.

You plan on not being at home when that call comes in?  heheheh

I built kind of a crazy desktop for Pantheon, but I figure I will probably do some upgrades before the game actually comes out given that we're probably a year to a year and a half before it is released.

Don't buy anything until Launch day.  Everything will be faster, better, and cheaper, compared to anything you'll buy up until that moment.  Laptop, Desktop, doesn't matter.

    what vjek said.

right now a 1050/1060/1070/1080 is top cards. Pantheon is likely 1-2+ years away. 1150/1160/1170/1180 or maybe the 1250/1260/ etc might be out by then.

You may want to define what breaking the bank is?  What kind of price range are you looking at?

I don’t have a set range. I just want to get the job done for as cheap as possible and meet medium graphics low lag. I have no idea what these things costs or what I need specs wise to “meet expectations” I’m not a huge computer guy tbh.

My daily laptop is a surface which I actually use for eq when I play that but I know that won’t handle pantheon. I have alpha and beta package I wouldn’t hate being able to play it some then which is why I am asking now.

Sorry if that’s not a lot of information.

Wait...the game us two years away. At that point the underlying engine / graphics will be a few years old. You will be able to get a reasonable machine that will run it no problem. It is not worth even talking about a new computer for Pantheon at this point.

I am hoping for late 2019 with no real expectation that it won't be 2020.

If you need a machine fairly soon for other reasons get what you need - Pantheon should do fine on any reasonably current not too crappy machine. VR is extremely sensitive to the risk of excluding people by having computer requirements set too high. A non-Windows machine being the most risky.

If you are upgrading solely for Pantheon as others have said, wait. Even if you want a machine for alpha or beta which will (by definition) come before release. There won't be competitive raiding in alpha I can pretty well guarantee so you won't need anything that good and if your current computer can't handle it you can see then what will give the most bang for the buck.

I mean, you're talking something that's A) 1-2 years away and B) we have 0 specs on yet. Start saving money now, then buy in a year or 2 when we get some solid info is what I would recommend, otherwise you may wind up having to upgrade again.

I plan on doing something similar except as a desktop, mine is nearly 8 years old, and I've had to replace a few parts, but for the most part everything is pretty original and runs brand new stuff still with no problems. However, I do plan on updating it and building a brand new one right before the game launches, i have the money now, but I'm not gonna buy it now because of the above 2 points. There is no reason especially since my current runs just fine.

If you *ARE* dead set on a laptop, I would recommend waitung until the "last possible second" to purchase it, to make sure that you get the latest tech.  Upgradability is ome of the reasons I prefer desktops foor gaming.  When it comes down to it, build the buggest, baddest computer you can afford without going into debt for it.  Computers age in dog years and there no sense in going into debt on a commputer that grows more "medeocre" over time.

I chose to build my new gaming rig a year ago because I hadn't had a desktop computer in about five years and it was time.  I use it for other things, and other games.  I went super crazy on it, intentionally.  I will, probably upgrade it at least once before the game goes live, but more than likely twice.  I knew that when Ibuilt it, so it ddoesn't come as a surprise to me, and I am ok with that.

That said, I don't recommend everyone take my route.  My route is kind of expensive.....hehehehe

If you want a laptop that can game, make sure it has descrite graphics card, preferably with 4GB of graphics memory which is fine for 1080p gaming for a couple more years.

However, it's way too early to be buying a computer for Pantheon. We use to deal with this all the time in the VG forums before beta. There's just no way to know how the game is going to play. Even a computer than runs the PA well today, doesn't mean it will in two years. They have a technical artist that is continually improving the graphics, and also, they are continually upgrading the graphics engine.

Unless your in the Alpha etc and want a pc for that, I bought a gaming laptop for that reason and my aging desktop was several years old. I may buy a new laptop for launch but for now I'm ready for testing.

This is what I bought last year. I think it was around $2k or something. I am using it as a desktop also with external keyboard/mouse and monitor connected.

That is a piece of crap, dont buy that lol. gtx 1050 and a sata 5400 rpm platter drive garbage.

At least get a 1070 gtx, and an SSD. Platter drive is only good for holding data you don't access often. AT least get a 7200rpm one. Nice size SSD to install the frequently used games on and OS is perferred. I'd go more ram also for having plenty of resources for other programs running. 12gb is fine but I go for more if can for a few more $100s. 16G at least with identical size gb ram chips like 2x 8GB. Your build has 1x 4gb and 1x 8gb. Not the best config.

Good feedback everyone. I will, time permitting be trying to get something early to mid alpha. Sounds like 16 gig ram, ssd, and 4gb min graphics cars is the way to go at a minimum. I’ll start researching some and probably ask once alpha comes out to see how people’s rigs are doing similar to this

Maybe something like this in a year or so when alpha is out

Thats better. Id spec out an alienware also only because the cooling I have experienced with mine has been awesom and be around the same price.
