Name Reservations (yet another post on it...)

So I did a little searching, and didn't find anything that touched on the part where I have questions on. And personally I'm not expecting there to be an answer as of yet, this might be something that they have yet to plan on. But basically, when one reserves a name, how limited will they be? For example:

    • Can the name reservation expire if not used in a certain amount of time

There is no doubt that people will have a name reservation set up, but just won't use it. And thats just another name that perhaps someone else could have used that would be utterly wasted.

    • Will it be limited to certain servers/one or two servers

If someone reserves a name, I doubt that they'll go to every server and create a character with the same name, and actually do anything on a majority of them

    • How many names can someone reserve

It wouldn't be fair for someone to just stock up on a ton of names, some of which s/he may never use (which thus goes back to the expiration idea)

I did see two of these things mentioned in a comment on a post but I don't think anyone really respond, or perhaps I just didn't dig deep enough. But regardless, the name reservations, in my opinion, deffinitely need some regulation and limitation to some extent. Perhaps not too harsh, but still. And I'm sure that VR is already aware of these types of issues regarding the subject, but you never know...plus I'm curious as to what they, and others, have to say about it.

What I am about to tell you is based off of personal experience.  I have seen this go two different ways.

The first way is that the game is released to the testers anywhere from a few days earlier to a couple weeks early before actual retail release.  They get to log in and create a character which reserves the name.

The second way is what I am expecting.  I was a tester for Everquest 2.  They also offered a reservation system.  How they did that was they sent a small part of the program, the character creator, to the testers.  You could log into the character creator, design your character model and name your toon.  This saved your character name in the system and also got you into the game a tiny bit earlier as your character model was already created.

It has been a long time since EQ2 beta and my memory may be a little fuzzy, but I would expect something similar.

    This has ben discussed elsewhere:

    But to summarize....

    1. Hey Kilsin, Is this something we will have to type in our profile info? Or is it something we type once we get in game?

Kilsin said: I am not sure how we will handle this yet but you will be given plenty of notice and it will most likely be via the client but too early to say as this will be a feature for the full launch of the game and we still have testing to get through :)

    2. I have pledged some time ago so does that mean once we get an alpha to play we can start reserving names?

Kilsin said: No, as I said, names will most likely be reserved for launch but we will start discussing it more during testing as the servers and all accounts will be wiped before launch so it would be pointless reserving and using names that will be wiped clean ;)

    3. What about reserving names for classes (possibly) not available at launch, eg Bard?

Kilsin said: While it is still a bit early, the best answer I can give at this stage is ... ..  create that name on a character for the server you wish to join and keep it as a placeholder, then once we launch Bards, we will most likely be able to do a name change, but this is all assumptions at the moment, it is a long way off and may change or be completely different by the time we get around to name reservations.

A character creator!? Do you know how many nerdgasms would happen if Panthon released something like that..you know, just to mess around on

Pretty sure like a day ago or so Kilsin made a post about this (in the Q wipes thread still on main page)

Saying there was going to be a website or something similar to register the name if that's part of your pledge.

I glossed over it, most of my most used names are Icelandic words or phrases so... usually not a whole Lotta competition.

As long as it has a random button so I don't need to spend longer than 30 seconds creating my character (assuming of course that you don't have to deal with putting stats in the right place in the character creator).

This has been discussed, but hasn't been directly answered. I image they might if it's practical, but probably not a high priority:

    https://www.pantheonmmo.com/content/forums/topic/5243/page-from-eq2-playbook/view/page/1

    https://www.pantheonmmo.com/content/forums/topic/2570/releasing-character-creator-early/view/page/1

But even that could theoretically be separate from the name reservation. It could just be a tool to give you an idea of what the character creation will be like so you can plan your looks out ahead of time. Even if it doesn't directly import your character into the world on live, it would certainly save some time on launch day if you already know what you want your character to look like. Because as Sun said before, the name reservation itself will be done through an external web page.

Yes, I was thinking along the lines of just a fun little thing to play around with and show off everyone's creations on the forums. Not so much a way to reserve your name just yet

    Thanks Evoras! :)

We will have more information on this when we get closer to testing but for now, this remains the most accurate information.

What, so no name change potion for $10 :-)

I wonder how many names we will be able to reserve, and if the number changes by pledge amount. We'll find out eventually. Debating if I should pledge again to be able to reserve some names on a second account. Playing mmo's for so long I think most people have 3-5 names they really want from past characters.
