So this brings up memories of Ultima Online. In that game you were able to get these special Rune's that you could 'Mark' to a location. So you would go to a spot somewhere in the world and cast 'Mark Rune' (or whatever the spell was called) and it would then sync that Rune to that spot in the world. Then you could cast your 'Recall' spell and then click on the Rune you wanted and it would take you to that pre-set spot in the world. You could carry several different Rune's around with you all set at different locations. Once you got really skilled up, you could actually cast a Portal spell with a Rune that would open a gateway that others could walk through to go to that Rune's location.

So one of my RL friends who had a really powerful character... he would fight his way very deep into a very tough dungeon with like Lich Lords and Elementals that could toast most players very quickly. He would then Mark his rune there in the room with all these very tough enemies. Then he would head back out to the low level area of the zone where all the majority of players were fighting. These players would be low enough that most of them were not able to cast 'Recall' spells yet, so they would have to make the long run back to town to bank their loot and such. So my friend would then announce that he was opening a portal back to town for anyone who needed to go to the bank, and it was like tossing crumbs on an ant hill. He would have a mob of these players racing to get to his Portal before it faded away. Little did they know they were portaling to their doom.

For those who don't know how things worked in Ultima Online, when you died your corpse would be lootable by any other player who came along and found your corpse. In those early days there was no penalty for looting somebodies corpse, and with it being fully PvP game, it was often one of the quickest ways to get loot by finding it on the corpses of others.

So after 5 minutes of watching players pooring into his Portal my friend would step through the Portal himself and there would be a mass grave site of lowbie players corpses all overflowing with the loot they were so anxious to put in their banks for safe keeping. He would then dispatch the Lich Lord who was still drooling over all those corpses and he'd spend the next 5 - 10 minutes filling his bags till he could barely move and then he'd recall himself back to his house and unload.

As you can imagine, his character became one of the most hated characters on the server, and eventually nobody would go near a Portal if there was even a hint that his character was in the area.

One of the great things about this system, was that players could open their houses and lock runes on tables to offer a library of teleport areas.

As recall was a much lower level spell that writing a rune, you could block your magery skill to keep using recalm with runes made by others, or hubs like thoses.

I realize malicious intents can ruin pretty much every good system, but frankly, looting newbies ? They were poors souls on rags most of the time.

Wizards porting to spires (the idea from EQ is just fine), and druids through the root systems of trees ? That would work for me
