Community Debate - Holiday Events - Now that Christmas is behind us, do you like seeing real-world holiday events celebrated in MMORPG fantasy world settings? #MMORPG#CommunityMatters

    No.

I don't like seeing anything that takes me out of the game world experience or ruins immersion and RL holiday events are one of the biggest suspension-of-disbelief-breaking weirdities to throw in.

Having said that, I don't doubt that the folks of Terminus have their own 'festivals' and other events. Would love to see those, but PLEASE don't make them be twee versions of RL events with pop culture references. Make them unique and lore-based and interesting in their own right.

Even having events at the same time as RL holidays is bad, though I understand you want people to have the time to take part if you've taken effort to develop them. To be honest, a lot of old school players that Pantheon is attracting will be busy with family stuff at RL holiday times and would probably appreciate game festivals being at other times (as long as they are advertised well in advance).

No. I’d prefer games not mimic real world holidays.

I would not mind if it coincided with a RL holiday but was done in accordance with the lore of the game.

For example,  nothing wrong with having a winter solstice being celebrated around christmas time.  Only problem here is if it takes say,  a month,  for each season to play out then you would need to roll out the winter solstice every four months.

Might be easier to create an in game reason for celebration.  Maybe a culmination of public questing at certain intervals and the story behind those quests could coincide with RL holidays.

Jan 1st a new world was found by some archaologists digging in some ruins found a portal.  The people celebrate the possibilities. Later that month a beloved NPC lost his wife in the portal and begins a search for her.  In early February she is found and everyone rejoices and celebrates their loved ones.  In March the Dwarves find a new form of hops from the new world and start brewing a new ale from it,  it turns out green but tastes amazing so the dwarves rejoice.  etc etc etc

As long as it is not too cheeky just about any holiday could be mimicked to some degree,  and if it is in a portal type thing players that might be offended by their holiday being mimicked instead of celebrated for face value need not take part.

I think it would be much better to make our own holidays, kind of like instead of making a holiday on the last thursday of November like thanksgiving, make it like the last thursday of september, and much kind of like 2 months prior or within a certain window on big holidays, and call it something else, and make it also not look like those holidays as well, that way you still have a decent timeline of when holidays can be but can use your own imagination/ideas of what our holidays would be like, i think this would be a awesome solution to this discussion.

    No.

While I appreciate Earth‘s holidays, I wouldn‘t want to see them in Terminus. It would be good to have GM events that pertain to the world of Terminus during our holidays though. Community events, scavenger hunt, prize quests etc. The races of Teminus having their own deity/racial events would be fun too imo.

I like that! :) Them having Terminus events in a similar time frame.

I don't want to see anything resembling RL Christmas and Holidays like Santa Claus, Christmass trees etc. I want Pantheon to have their own lore based events, I wouldn't mind if they 'happen" to be in exact same time as ours though.

If there are events like solstice then I hope it will be in accordance to Terminus seasons and not real ones.

Events that are not directly connected with rl events are great fun. I hope we have an event every 2 months so we have some variation and somthing to look forward for. Like special recepies, loot, and so on.

Please No Christmas trees and read hats..

I would like Pantheon to develop their own lore around holidays. For example, don't have "Christmas" or "Santa" in Pantheon, but in December, their could be some sort of seasonal winter event or quests.  No quests where Greatfather Winter (aka WoW's Santa) has you opening presents under a tree. That is too similar to real world and has no place in Pantheon lore.

Likewise during October, there could be an undead/vampire seasonal quest that may be a veiled reference to Halloween, but is uniquely Pantheon and has a real meaning to the residents of Terminus.

I don't mind them occasionally, but when they feel contrived or not really meaningful in the lore of the world, it really takes away from the experience rather than adding to it.  So, I could just as easily do without them.

no, break the dive I don't want to see in Ternimus a warrior with a santa hat or a rudol mount with a red nose

Basically these events are built by breaking the immersion and the decoration doing daily missions that give aesthetic objects that break the fantasy world

I don't like any of the 3 things

to make events I think Pantheon should have his own adjusted to the lore, it is assumed that each race comes from a different world I do not see that the Skar and the elves have the same celebrations
Gnomes are not beings of magical energy? they are going to celebrate the beer festival that the dwarves could have
Do gnomes drink beer? Do gnomes drink?

I'm with the majority here. No real world holiday spoofs, they need to fit in Pantheon lore. The "general" theme could match up, and maybe even should. Late October the undead are restless for some Pantheon reason, late December is a time for giving, etc.

    No.

The game world is not Earth.  It should have its own calendar, seasons, holidays, festivals, etc. Oh, and not just re-skinned and/or re-titled versions either.

EDIT:  Speaking of the calendar, why should the seasons (if there actually are any) on Terminus line up with any seasons of earth?  The only reason why we have the seasons we do is because of the speed at which the planet rotates, the angle at which the planet is aligned compared to the plane of the orbit and the orbital speed/distance from the sun.  Why should Terminus have a 365 day calendar?  Or 12 months?  Be original in coming up with a calendar...make something actually unique.

    Absolutely not under any circumstances.

But having Terminus-based holidays that occur at the same time of the year is fine.

No Christmas, no Yule, no Santa. But a celebration of *something* at that same time is fine.

How about tempering marketing zeal with respect for heavy holidays and instead look to the reality of "light" holidays.

Marketing zeal understands that on traditional gift giving days such as Christmas, games are given and often played or started on those days. For new players, seeing the pizazz of RL themes carried over into the game world is fun the first time but gets boring fast as the years go by. The general millieue of such "heavy" holidays being tainted by commercialism or materialism is real. Look at the ire genetated on how soon decorations go on sale after haloween! let alone that pumkin spice starts to invade the air in august! SUCH THINGS CAUSE DISGUST irl. (caps unintended, but seemed appropriate)

So how can VR/Terminus be cool about it all?  NOT having RL themed related stuff around the "heavy" holidays. But knowing the longevity nature of the game and the years and years devoted to it instead to look for those "lighter" holidays? The days more people have off and are likely to be eager to want to take advantage of a 6 hour session by seeing what the Devs have to offer?  Columbus day, Labor day. Memorial day, Chinese New year, parents day/granparents day(the week of japanese holidays in may) May day (effing brits...). Haloween is sort of on the cusp as something undead and scary is always appreciated. Thanksgiving is also on the cusp canadian and US.

Keep the "heavy" holidays out, but maybe have something Terminus Only related, that happens to coincide on one of the global "light" holidays? Like Myr tentacle celebration on the Japanese parents/grandparents/family week of holidays, Orcish Meat Miner/strike festival that happens to coincide on Labor day, Blackrose keep bleeding heart jelly donuts, and thorny cards on valentines day or something.

Personally, keep them unique to Terminus, but if you must line them up with RL holidays? do it on the "lighter" holidays when people are prone to have an extra day off and make it just cheeky enough to hint at an RL association but not over the top.

No real world festivals/holidays, please. If such can't be strictly aligned with the lore of Terminus, then just leave them out all together.

Such great ideas guys/gals on the lore being a part of the world of Terminus regarding this topic. I think this world’s lore will be a strength of Pantheon.

I agree with the majority of posters here.  NO to RL holidays in-game.

Big YES to special events tied to lore.  If there is an in-game calendar of any sort, then I'd be up for seasonal events which correspond.

    No,
Would like to see each race have their own holiday in game could mimic some of the RL holidays ( mix of all beliefs would be cool )
Also se have RL holidays...so tines I could be in game running a special xmas event, i might have to pass because I have family in RL events. Same with dev team, it's a game for us, but work for dev team.

The holidays we celebrate are unique to our world, they should not have any meaning inside another world.  Remember, we are creating a world, not a game.

However, there are many common events that spur holidays that I would love to see in terminus such as:
    Regional Holidays:
    Revolutions/Wars
    Political/Social
    Harvests/Blooms

    Global Holidays:
    Religions/Deities
    Seasons
Lunar/Solar Cycles (does terminus have multiple moons/suns?)

I would love to see the extrapolation of the history of terminus give rise to days of celebration or mourning on certain important days for races, religions, regions, etc..

I agree with most of the others here.  I definitely enjoy in-game events, but they should be unique to the game.

Holidays that fit the game's lore that coincidentally match up with real-world holidays would be cool.

    Unique traditions could be started.

Yeah, that's awesome - looking at it from a perspective unique to the game is a nice way of looking at it. The lore of Terminus is really looking great.

Christmas & other earth holidays being thrown in the fantasy games irritates me.
