...  Later, after they delayed Alpha to focus on art and polish for Faerthale, they said that might not still be the case, so it's possible that there isn't even going to be a single complete continent, but what is there will be closer to launch quality.

Can you perhaps remember where it was they said that, stream or interview or forum post?

    Thanks

Alpha doesn't have to be close, we likely have at least another year of Pre-Alpha at the rate they are developing content.  Its safe to assume Alpha won't be available until they have the starting areas flushed out along with the the races and classes that are expected at launch.  Alpha players won't be held to the same EULA as the Pre-Alpha testers and there will be way too much YouTube posting of crazy bugs and crashes giving the public the wrong impression of the game if they opened Alpha access too soon.  They are doing streams with people like Cohh to keep comentary and content revealed regulated, which is a smart move.

It makes a ton of sense that VR would wish to have at least the starting zone for every starting race up and running before they start Alpha. Considering that they haven't even released a map of the southern continent, getting all the starting zones finished could certainly take a while.

Given that they aren't making Alpha into an "advance play" deal, why do you think the NDA for it will be less restrictive than for Pre-Alpha?

I wasn't sure about Cohh when I watched his first stream, but I've liked him more with each subsequent stream that I've seen.

Strongly disagree, that makes little sense. Faerthale is going to be our alpha playground while they take the lessons learned and tools created there and apply them to creating the rest of the world. They aren't going to delay PA5 by 6++ months while working on PF just to turn around and have there be another year of pre alphas while they make starter cities. Starter cities are for a connected world in beta. PF gives them what they need to test the game from top to bottom in a more easily controlled environment. They don't need 13 more zones to test game mechanics, they need game mechanics.

Well it's already been stated that before they open to Alpha, they want a full fleshed out continent. Which makes sense. They can't unleash 1000's of people into a couple zones. They want a somewhat fully functional immersive continent.

Part of the rationale is they know when the public at large see't it, that will translate into more pledging, or no pledging, depending on how good, or bad it looks.

Yes it's alpha, but todays gaming world thinks of alpha's as highly playable and closely representing a playable game.

So my expectation is Alpha does not start until there is a continent full of fairly well fleshed out content. This means game mechanics at a highly functional state. Lore is largely in place. Harvesting and crafting is progressed to a basic beginning functional state. There are well designed and interesting quests.

I agree that is what ideally should be done as well, but even a while ago VR mentioned they are shifting direction to not have a fully fleshed out continent for Alpha 1.  We will prob get just half of one.  It was mentioned in a previous newsletter ( cant recall which one )

Bazgrim had quotes about that situation.

This was before PF was a thing.

Yup and here is the vid: https://youtu.be/sWoEXiM4laA

Expect more quality and less quantity in early Alpha.
