"Made by..."

In EQ2, when you crafted a piece of armor or a weapon it was branded with a "Made by" tag. So when looking at its info you could see that it was a craftable piece made by a particular player. When other people inspected you, they could see who you went to to get your armor or weapons or other gear made.

I find myself neutral regarding whether or not a system like this would be neat to have and was wondering what others thought about it. Could be a decent way to gain exposure as a crafter, given there's also an inspect feature (which I totally am an advocate of).

I don't think there have to be a made by plate on a crafted item. But maybe it could matter who crafted an item? Maybe it's good to know who is the crafter that could craft items in the best quality, if the quality can be different per crafter. Or if the original crafter can repair items of his origin the best. Others can repair them as well but with a loss of quality. If it will be important who crafted an item, such a plate on the item could make sense.

I like having my name on the stuff I craft.  Moreso when I see gear I made out in the world being used.

There is a certain amount of pride that goes into crafted weapons, gear, and items. If the game mechanics allow for tags, then I am all for it. I just love it when a person comments on a piece of gear that I have slaved over to perfect, especially when they have seen it being worn by another player. Thats just good for business.

I liked the "crafted by" marker on gear when inspected.

I have to say I like when theres a "crafted by" tag on crafted items, especially if quality of items can vary depending on the crafter and how it was crafted. When I'm the crafter I love having my name on the item almost as if it was my brand, and I'm filled with pride when I see players wearing the gear I made! :D I agree with Klumpedge, it's just good for business. :)

I'd love to see tagged crafted items too. It would be so cool if there was just one player who did nothing but craft swords and effectively turned into a "Hatori Hanzo" a la Kill Bill. People wielding his/her blades would turn heads and be asked slowly and dramatically "You... have... a legendary Rachael sword!?!?!"

I'm down with any mechanic which enables heroic figures to emerge within the player base.

Having a well-developed, engaging crafting system that is not easy lends to this in some extent. Perhaps not at that level, but close enough for my satisfaction. I know EQ2 had a dedicated crafting community with some people who exclusively crafted. They were well-known within the servers, and having them around was such an incredible positive for the community as a whole.

I like the idea, but I would also like to be able to turn it off/on.  I love crafting, I find pride in putting in the work and making items as well as seeing people using my items, but I don't want to get tells about crafting while I'm grouping or raiding.  So perhaps you could click a box on the crafting window to emboss the item or not, or an interesting 3rd option, if you could emboss a symbol or codename onto the item that when clicked would open an in-game email to the crafter without revealing her or his name.  The codename suggestion might need some refining, wouldn't want to use someone else's character name etc.

Hah, I don't think people would be receiving so many tells that it would be bothersome, if anything it would be welcomed. No need for toggle or overcomplicated systems :) Can always just ignore them until you're free to respond.

I would love a tag to the crafter. It would be phenomenal if (as a crafter) you have a special talent (quested) that allowed a unique spin on gear made (not talking stats but more or less designs/colors).

Hello everyone. I like the idea of "Made by" however, i think i should be done by grandmaster or similiar ranking if there will be one impleneted. Just prior to getting the "Made by", you would have to do a quest, maybe raid even, i dont know. Afterall you worked so hard and many hours behind it. Now you will need help, with friends or strangers, or guildmates if its a raid, to get your "Made by" tag. But only for ONE special or specialize crafting skill. Not all. Just a thought.

Speaking from personal experience, I never wore armour made by anyone other than my characters, to me it was like I earned the right to wear it.  A little crazy? maybe haha.

But I agree with the sentiment that a made by tag would be a great idea, with the caveat that there would be a need for different grades of crafted gear.

They might have a poorly crafted, ie a botched up crafting recipie that failed  "You lack the skill to fashion these items together".  Of course a crafter wouldn't want their marks on failures.
a normal crafted, the combine was a success.  Run of the mill crafted peice, unsure if a crafter would want their name on it.
a finely crafted, combine was performed well.  This would warrant a maker's mark.
a masterwork crafted, combine was exceptionally well done.  This would also warrant a maker's mark
Though the main issue with this is, depending on how the crafting system goes for Pantheon, if it adopted the EQ system, there isn't much a player can do to improve the quality since its a simple push a button with ingredients in a container.   If it is just a modifer based on skill, like 12% for a masterwork peice, it just feels like a luck factor more than actual skill of the craftsman.  RNG seems a flame point for alot of gamers nowadays and that we don't want to feed that fire.  Maybe they could have ingredient grades, so you'll see crafters coveting higher quallty ingredients, but that would add another layer of complexity.

Along the lines of hiding the true name of the maker, Pantheon could adopt a insignia or mark system like coach suggests, so the player who wants something crafted by that maker, might have to scour a city to look for the makers shop for instance.  It will require alot more programming and development time to implement that sort of system for just for a bit of flavour.

A question though, is how involved does Visionary Realms plan/want crafting to be in Pantheon.  Though I personally hated the WoW system of crafting as it felt void of any character or soul and without the risk of failure you get no sense of accomplishment with your successes.

I tend to agree with this. Crafting quest for a item you fashon that gives a bonus to X skill. I dont think you should need a raid in order to achieve this however. Anyone should be able to max crafting and have the skill to get the quest done without the need for 20-40-60 other people in a raid setting.

In the end the majority of crafted gear is made because for long periods of time its the best gear you can get at that level unless you spend time farming at lvl 30-40-50. Most people for thoes levels wont spend the time as its easier to just keep leveling through or craft your own gear to help keep your edge.

I have seen this in a couple other games and I like it. Although it might be best to just give the crafter the option of whether or not to tag their name on an item when they craft it. As others have suggested, it definitely allows the possibility to become a "famous" crafter on your server. Like, let's say you have a habit of inspecting people in your group and eventually notice that several people are wearing armor that was crafted by "Soandso," you'll think "wow, this Soandso guy must do a ton of really high-level crafting' and that person essentially becomes a bit of a celebrity and over time, becomes the go-to guy for crafting. Having that brand gives the crafter a sense of pride.

Hey all. I know someone will just to be either funny or something else...have name China, Japan, USA or Yourmom, or what ever weird name or creative name they come up with. Question, how will they address the prankness if it becomes an issue for others? I do like to see crafters names Made by so and so, rather then Made by Yourmom or something that offends people. Will they be a way to send in ticket or submit quest type (since there will not be many master/grandmaster crafters) (if there is a Made by to be implemented).

Those names won't get past the name filter so I wouldn't worry about it.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes had crafters names on their items and it worked very well, it was good to know who made your item so you could ask them for more later on and some crafters got really well known across the lands for being able to make the best gear with the rarest powders/attributes etc. so this is something I personally would love to see brought back :)

I love what is being discussed here, and it got me thinking. A thought I had while putting the kids to bed, a crafters quest to become a master, and what would that look like? Could there be a quest to build the tool that would become your "Maker's Mark"?

The tool: a series of steps that take you to different areas in the world, finding different rare materials (some imbued with different types of mana - fire, ice, etc etc.) a robust system of different types of lines, say you have a basic 9 space shape. in the center is a flame, with lines coming off of it like the sun in the four spaces directly connected to the center, with different runes (shapes) on the corners. Or perhaps the crafter decides to go to an ogre camp, and build their tool out of very ogreish shapes (their language or whatever else you could find in their artwork). Fact of the matter is you could have very elaborate and varied tools depending on what the crafter decides to seek out, this system could also open up the door for counterfeits ;)

The idea makes more sense in my head, here is a quick sketch of what I was thinking. thoughts?

This is pretty cool. But how exactly would the tool work? Would this image appear somewhere in the item description? On the actual armor as it appears on your character? Both?

This also seems like it would make it harder to achieve "brand recognition." In other words, to associate a character's actual name with their maker's mark. The mark may look cool and would be a fun quest, but I don't see what purpose it would actually serve. And without purpose, people won't take the time to do the quest. I also don't really see how opening the door for counterfeiting would be a good thing.

Maybe something that's better in theory than in practice? lol

Lol probably, I was mildly intoxicated when I came up with that. Although if there were some way to put a personal mark on it, a tool that feels personal, and invested (time and effort) could make the process of "making your mark" feel more rewarding. Perhaps after my classes today I will take another look at this to see if I can better clarify the idea. But yeah counterfeiting would be bad news. In the interest of not hijacking someone elses idea, I made a seperate post :)

This is definitely something I agree with. Especially in a community based economy and so forth. This allows you to claim your work once you've give it out and if it's good quality people will know your name. Also, it helps that if I got a great piece of gear crafted from a player and I want to continue business with said player then I can refer to the armor tag. Sure I could have added that person to my friends list but the tag itself I think would help you get recognized as a quality crafter quicker than just doing lots of business.

Aside from that, people that make things in the real world have logos and signatures, this is a good way to mimic that in my opinion

I like the idea of a Master Mark; however, I think names should only be put against "items of worth". Why would you want your character associated with mass produced "elm goblets"? I guess its fine from a production/selling point of view, but if these items are just created as a means to level, then there is no point. I would much prefer maker’s names being put against rare crafted items that took time and effort in collecting materials and crafting. The name would only matter if that weapon could be passed on to another (either as a gift or for sale) or players could check out peoples equipment directly. This would be providing natural advertising and let people know who to go to for specialist items.

IMHO, make it an attained skill to be able to mark items with a character’s name, also make it only available on rare crafted items once you have the skill.

I loved the "crafted by" system in EQ2 and IIRC, WoW had or still has that aspect also.  I think I remember making armor kits in WoW and having my name on them.  When I would look in the auction hall and see the names of people who made high level items, it was an easy way to see who I could contact in the event I needed some high level item made of that specialization.

It's was also a great sense of pride when I would get a tell or whisper in-game from someone asking me if I could do a combine or make something for them because they saw my name on some piece of work of mine that they came across.

Would love to be able to put my "mark" or namebrand on my work.   Something I noticed in EQII  and that was people who sit on the auction house,  buy up all similar items, put them in a stack,  those "marks" or "namebrands" would disappear...wonder if that was a bug,  and wonder if the Devs would have a solution to that problem.   There are people who do that..buy up stacks of crafted pieces, then undercut others...on price.  Saw too much of that in EQII and it became discouraging after awhile.   Not willing to spend or lose value on my goods because someone operates that way.   If there was a way to make sure those Marks or namebrands were permanent and perhaps not stackable with someone else's mark or namebrand (just your own)  then that might be a solution?  Have to leave that to the Dev's judgement.
